Singapore may have experienced the heat wave in the past weeks, and hit the second-highest temperature record in April 2022. Despite the heat, we saw a line at HaiDiLao Hotpot getting longer than ever with customers waiting to get their Mala Hotpot fixed.
Mala is a combination of 2 chinese words: ma meaning numb and la meaning spicy, which is an exact sensation you would typically experience after your mala indulgence. The Mala craze has reached Singapore shores for years and it hasn't shown any signs of going away. So we have compiled a list of Mala flavoured snacks to get your Mala Xiangguo fix without the food coma after.
Ooh Lala - Mala Cassava Chips
Every seasoned Mala goer knows that the kick for any good mala creeps and picks up with every bite. We tried Ooh Lala's halal mala cassava chip and it has a light overall feel to it, so this means you can easily finish a half or a whole pack by yourself. Our lips did get a little numb and tingly after we've popped in a few of these babies.
Fupi - Sichuan Mala Beancurd Crisp
You can taste the spicy, floral spicy notes in each of Fupi's Sichuan Mala Beancurd Crisp. Made without any preservatives, we like that these mala soy skin chips are light and airy with the right amount of spice level. This is perfect if you crave for a healthy snack with a hint of spice.
Crusty - Mala Fish Skin
Milder than the other mala flavours out there, these mala salted egg fish skins still pack a good heat alongside the savouriness of the salted eggs. It tastes great and has a good crunch. You can share this with friends that don't have a high tolerance for spicy foods.
Mala Mala - Mushroom Chips
Hand-cut shitake mushroom chips that are low in calories but high on spicy flavour! If you want to challenge your personal spicy limits, this is it. We went on a wild spicy ride with this pack and we could feel the burning sensation after 1 piece, definitely not for the fainthearted!
Golden Duck - Sichuan Mala Hotpot Fragrant Mix
This bag comes in a mix of beancurd skin, crunchy mushrooms and fish skin. It feels almost like eating a full meal. Even though we saw chilli bits, it wasn't overly spicy and we didn't get a tingly numbness. There was still a good level of spice, and the Sichuan peppercorn taste was very subtle.
My Chef - Sichuan Mala Crisps
These Sichuan mala crisps have a great spicy kick and we have to say this pack is really addictive. It reminds us of Pringles but with delicious mala flavour! This pack has our shiok vote!
